NATO War Crimes in Libya

NATO War Crimes in Libya

Although the rationale of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) for entry into Libyan conflict invoked humanitarian principles, the results have proven far from humane. In July 2011, NATO aircraft bombed Libya’s main water supply facility, which provided water to approximately 70 percent of the nation’s population. And, in a failed attempt to appear unbiased and objective, the BBC has revealed, almost a year after the information was relayed by independent media, that British Special Forces played a key role in steering and supervising Libya’s “freedom fighters” to victory.

From Panama to Yugoslavia, Iraq, Libya and Syria

From Panama to Yugoslavia, Iraq, Libya and Syria

U.S. Lies Weapons of mass destruction and “uprisings”: Five invasions, three continents, deceit identical

“I do not understand this prudishness about using gas. We have definitely adopted the position at the Peace Conference of arguing in favor of the retention of gas as a permanent method of warfare … I am strongly in favor of using poison gas against uncivilized tribes. “

(Winston S. Churchill, 1874-1965, the minutes of the War Office, May 12, 1919.)

While increases aggression against Syria, as well as increasingly risky claims and double standards, and wave, plotting and terrorist financing (sorry: “help legitimate opposition”), it is instructive to consider the justifications provided by the U.S. government . States. in other murderous raids in recent history.

This month marks the twenty-third anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Panama on December 20, 1989, while the Panamanians prepared their Christmas celebrations. A quick reminder that the late Philip Agee recalled that President George HW Bush told the American people that the threat of Panama (population: 3571185-2011) was so great that “our way of life is at stake.” Agee referred to this in his lecture aptly named “Producing the appropriate crisis” [1]. Rightly then as now. Nothing changes.

The aim of the invasion was to capture the country’s leader, General Manuel Noriega and, of course, “establish a democratic government.” Regime change.

With the upcoming transfer of control of the Panama Canal to Panama (originally scheduled for January 1, 1990) after a century of American colonial administration, U.S. wanted to make sure it was in the hands of docile allies.

Noriega, a CIA asset since 1967 [2] who had also attended the notorious School of the Americas in Fort Benning, Georgia, came to power with U.S. backing, but apparently their support for U.S. . weakened.To cut a long story, USA kidnapped him and sentenced him to forty years in prison.

The invasion plan called “Operation Prayer”. He was later renamed “Operation Just Cause”, and General Colin Powell said it was a nickname he adopted since “Even our harshest critics would have to say” just cause “to attack us.” (Colin Powell, with Joseph E. Persico: My American Journey, 1995.)

All military plunder should be called simply: “Operation Stupid Name 1, then 2, 3, 4, etc.., Until they ran out of numbers.

27,000 U.S. troops backed by Apache helicopters decimated much of the small country, with a defense force of only 3,000. George Bush senior, said it was to overthrow an evil dictator who was abusing his own people (sound familiar?) And that action was needed to “protect American lives.” It was also about “defending democracy and human rights in Panama” and “protect the Canal.” What a surprise! Right?

Manuel Noriega was released from the U.S. prison in 2007, extradited to France, which had been awarded the country’s highest honor, the Legion d’honneur in 1987. He remained in jail in France until December 2011, and was returned to Panama, where he is still in jail.

In the almost forgotten tithes of Panama (unless it is Panamanian) the densely populated, impoverished village of El Chorrillo was incinerated by U.S. actions to an extent that was called “Little Hiroshima”.

A woman accused that “Americans began burning El Chorrillo near 6.30 in the morning. They threw a small devices to a house and caught fire, then went to another, burning of a street to the next, coordinating fires with radio handsets. “

Reportedly a U.S. soldier said: “We ask that you surrender… if you do not, we are willing to wipe each and every one of the buildings.”

“They were shooting at everything that moved,” said a resident of the city.

The dead were sent to mass graves and witnesses said U.S. troops used flamethrowers against the dead, and noted that the bodies writhing in fire. Others were leveled by bulldozers [3].

There are worse things. While current Pharisaic statements, even contradictory, Washington and Whitehall flow of chemical weapons Syria unsubstantiated, the proven facts relate to the U.S.

“From the forties to the nineties, USA used various parts of Panama as a testing ground of chemical weapons, including mustard gas, VX, sarin, hydrogen cyanide and other nerve gases … in mines, rockets and shells, perhaps tens of thousands of chemical munitions. “ (William Blum: Rogue State, 2002).

Moreover, from Panama in late 1999 left “many sites containing chemical weapons. They had also “secret tested Agent Orange in Panama …” In the 1989 invasion, the village of Pacora, near Panama City, “was bombarded with (chemicals) for helicopters and U.S. Southern Command ., with substances that burn the skin, causing intense pain and diarrhea. “

Many analysts thought that Panama was the proving ground for Iraq.

Nine months after the poisoning of Panama in Hiroshima Day 1990, the United Nations imposed the embargo against Iraq choke driven by the U.S., once the U.S. ambassador in Iraq, April Glaspie, gave the green light to Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait, after considerable provocation and destabilization of financial and geographical Kuwait [4].

Sensationalism and other chemical weapons were fired, leading to Saddam Hussein to comment: “I fear that one day you will say we produce wheat using gunpowder.”

Thirteen months after Panama, USA led a coalition of 31 countries to “reduce Iraq to a pre-industrial era.” The only chemicals released in Iraq were the toxic mix of pharmaceutical bombed factories and fertilizer plants producing cars and factories across Iraq’s industrial base, including complex chemical and biological medicines, sold Iraq by U.S., UK, Germany and other previous decades, ironically sales, continued while the attack took place [5].

However, were introduced highly toxic, radioactive substances in Iraq, in the form of up to seven hundred fifty tons of depleted uranium munitions chemically toxic and radioactive with a “half-life” toxic than 4,500 million years. The endless list of deformed babies, stillborn, aborted, children born with cancers, small tombs, is a silent witness of weapons of mass destruction singular perversity. Iraq was bombed for 42 days and nights.

The overly publicized allegedly manufactured chemical weapons by Iraq, of course never met.

On 24 March 1999, NATO began to liberate Kosovo from Serbia. (The stupid name given by U.S.: Operation Noble Anvil) estimated that Kosovo was “inexhaustible” minerals for an estimated ten trillion (million & million) dollars in Trebca mines.

The “liberation” consisted of 78 days of continuous bombardment, including the use of depleted uranium weaponry. Was 20,000 tons of bombs dropped. Systematically destroyed communication facilities, fuel depots, airports, communications traffic, trains, markets, the Chinese Embassy, which opposed the attack. NATO, unconvincingly, said he had the wrong map. And, indeed, the center of the media. The killing of journalists is now another routine, a war crime for which there is no accountability.

Before the attack, the Pentagon said the Yugoslav Army had at least two types of toxic gases, with facilities to produce them. The U.S. Department of Defense warned Slobodan Milosevic and the Yugoslav Army General Staff: “If Belgrade uses toxic gases sarin and mustard against NATO, the response of the Organization North Atlantic Treaty will be devastating.”

Interestingly, after the start of air strikes, NATO did not mention once that was attacking the productive capacity of Serbia declared chemical weapons by the U.S. (Zagreb Globus, April 16, 1999, pages 18-19.)

The massive scale destruction, however, did not affect Trebca mines.

On August 14, 2000, nine heavily armed British soldiers, French, Italian, Pakistani and KFOR helicopters landed in the mines. Managers and workers tried to resist and were beaten, attacked with tear gas and plastic bullets. Resistant staff was arrested.

The UN documents describing the action as “… induction of democratization in Kosovo”. The attack, in fact, paved the way for the sale of the mines with content “unquenchable” of about 77,302,000 tons of coal, copper, zinc, lead, nickel, gold, silver, marble, manganese, iron ore, asbestos and limestone “to name a few” foreign private groups (news reports, websites.)

The “Kosovo Liberation Army” had been: “… trained and supported for years with millions of U.S. dollars and German marks … through the CIA and the BND (German intelligence service) for this war, civil war misleadingly called” [6] by government spokespersons and NATO governments.

Chemical and radiological properties of DU also rained down on the former Yugoslavia. In 2001, doctors at the hospital run by Serbs Kosovo Mitrovica stated that the number of patients suffering from malignant diseases had increased by 200% from a 1998 study.

A 2003 study by the United Nations Program for Environment (UNEP) found samples contaminated water and air in Bosnia Herzegovina. There was, of course, ’cause for alarm. “ Pekka Haavisto, former Minister of the Environment of Finland, head of UNEP, called for a comprehensive and exhaustive research to establish the true extent and dangers of pollution. U.S. -Cited as the only country to use depleted uranium weapons in that conflict-blocked the application [7].

However, there was alarm in Europe when peacekeepers Italian, Portuguese, Belgian and French developed cancers in the region, in a matter of months, a high proportion of those diagnosed died.Norwegian peacekeepers refused to be involved [8].

“Less than a month after the end of the war in Yugoslavia in 1999, the National Council on Radiation Protection British Britons warned of the dangers of remaining in Kosovo due to contamination of their territory by DU weapons.”

The peacekeepers, incidentally, were in Kosovo for weeks or months, people in the region live there, and the plight of their health and that of future generations was ignored and forgotten by their “liberators”.They had other “tyrants” to overthrow, to fight other people in their lives, limbs and livelihoods.

Iraq had again been bombed by U.S. and the UK during the Christmas season of 1998, four months before the attack on Yugoslavia and returned to radar since the invasion. The lies were familiar, and incessant, a currently topical example, one of many:

“September 2, 2002: Expert: Iraq has tons of chemical weapons.

“While some in the Bush administration pushing for a preemptive strike against Iraq, weapons experts say there is growing evidence that Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has amassed large stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons hiding a possible military attack U.S.

“Washington’s concern is that Iraq could provide these arms to terrorists … ‘If we wait until the danger is obvious, it may be too late,” said Sen. Joseph Biden, Democrat of Delaware, chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee. “

Now that Vice President Biden is, we can not help but ask if you have any involvement in the bias on Syria, with his words eerily similar.

“John Wolfsthal, an analyst at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said the significant inventory of Iraq:” Iraq continues to possess several tons of chemical weapons agents, enough to kill thousands of civilians or soldiers, “said Wolfsthal “[9].

Also: “Experts in United Nations weapons have said that Iraq may have stored more than 600 metric tons of chemical agents, including mustard gas, VX and sarin. Neither knows the whereabouts of some 25,000 rockets and 15,000 artillery shells with chemical, experts said.

“The concern is at hand, or could quickly create, the ability to produce vast quantities of Anthrax, tons of material” was the further statement of Wolfsthal.

“Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld ” said: “… Iraq has mobile biological weapons laboratories, it would be nearly impossible to identify and attack U.S. forces” The lives of thousands of people are at stake, he said. Indeed, since the invasion deaths of Iraqis by U.S. and British or their militias, and the puppet government tax, represent a real holocaust.

According to Jonathan Schwartz, who refocused the pack of lies about Iraq by General Colin Powell on February 5, 2003: “My colleagues, every statement I make today is backed up by sources, solid sources. There are statements. What I present are facts and conclusions based on solid intelligence … “Powell is now repentant.

Schwartz shows little understanding. On the fifth anniversary of misleading nonsense Powell, February 5, 2008, said: “Despite all the criticism that Powell has received so-called ‘painful’ and something ‘will always be part of my history’ – does not approach what is justified. Powell was much more than horribly wrong, the evidence is conclusive evidence that Amano and ignored repeated warnings that what he was saying was false. “

Totally illegal invasion of Iraq, based on a bunch of lies began transatlantic just 45 days later. Does your stupid name? “Operation Iraqi Liberation” OIL [Oil].

The lies about Libya under Colonel Gaddafi who arrived at the tip of the Human Development Index in Africa are recent memory. Nonetheless, a few memories:

The CIA paid traitors abound in these invasions and other for decades. For example, General Abdul Fatah Younis, the interior minister of Colonel Gaddafi, who “defected to the opposition” - what will have been its price? – And became chief of staff of the insurgents: “… advocated that NATO allies of the rebels arm themselves with heavy weapons, including helicopters and anti-tank missiles, to defend the besieged city of Misurata. He predicted that the dictator … would be willing to use chemical weapons as a last resort against rebels or civilians. “ (Amazing, words identical to the argument list of the current “opposition” Syrian.)

“Gaddafi is desperate now. Unfortunately it still has about 25% of its chemical weapons, which could be used as it is in a desperate situation … “

“We know that Colonel Gaddafi has about 10 tons of mustard gas remaining stocks had been destroyed under the supervision of a United Nations agency, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons” [10].

In context, in 2002, Neil Mackay, Investigations Editor winning Sunday Herald, said: “Driven by greed and a profound lack of morality, the British government violated the Chemical Weapons Convention selling chemicals” that could become weapons of war. “

Countries that benefited from UK sales, Mackay said, including Libya, Yemen, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Cyprus, India, Kenya, Kuwait, Malaysia, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Singapore, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Turkey and Uganda, “clearly admitted” a manager of the Department of Trade and Industry.

After handshake of Tony Blair with Colonel Gaddafi in March 2004, the British government announced plans to send experts to Libya to destroy chemical weapons it had sold, noting that Colonel Gaddafi had misled Blair over his existence. They seem to have forgotten that he was shipping documents. Equal to the ambiguities in the UK over Iraq.

Between the beginning of the destruction of Libya on March 19, 2011 and the inauguration of NATO on March 31, 2011, USA and the United Kingdom launched 110 cruise missiles against a country with a population of less than 6.5 million inhabitants. When NATO took command of “humanitarian intervention”, attacked the 26,500 minimum population with bombing raids.

Of course there were tears presidential children killed in Libya, whose death must have been preceded by an unimaginable horror, in an attack that had two stupid names, one for the U.S.: “Operation Odyssey Dawn” and one for the NATO’s “Operation Unified Protector”, the latter, defies comment.

Gaddafi himself lost three young grandchildren and three sons. In 1986, another bombing in U.S.adopted a little girl lost.

Moments after being informed of his terrible death at the hands of an angry mob “protected” by NATO, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton appeared on television laughing as he said: “We went, we saw, he died”.

Said long ago: “I really think that it takes a village to raise a child.” Now he seems to think that we must wipe out the village, their children, their parents and lynch the village elder to have a chance of strident mirth on television.

On December 4, 2012, Clinton warned that President Bashar al-Assad of Syria might be moving, guess what: “an arsenal of chemical weapons.”

We made it very clear our views. This is a red line for U.S. I will not detail specifically what we would do if they have evidence that the Assad regime has resorted to the use of chemical weapons against his own people, but certainly enough to say that we plan to take action if it happened, “he told a press conference in Prague.

Of course they “could use” weapons “to contain sarin gas,” according to another U.S. official. Another added: “… we are concerned about any action that might mean that somehow are willing to use those chemical weapons against his own people [11].

“Déjà vu again” as they say.

Syria said on December 6: “Syria again emphasizes, for the tenth, hundredth time, that if we had such weapons, would not be used against the people. Not commit suicide, “said Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Al Maqdad in Lebanese Al Manar television …”

“We fear that a conspiracy exists to provide a pretext for any subsequent interventions in Syria by countries that increase pressure on Syria.” BTW. Can not say it’s the first time.

In late October, U.S. troops arrived in Jordan for a major joint exercise near the Syrian border. Operation Stupid and Child Name: “Operation Lion Ambitious”. Al Asad translates into Arabic as: the lion.

Ironically, the first statement that Syria has chemical weapons appears to have come from John R.Bolton, who according to Congressman Henry Waxman persuaded George W. Bush to include the fairy-tale purchase yellow-cake from Niger in his State of the Union 2003. The claim has not been proven, however, since the documents are still classified.

Bolton is involved with a plethora of organizations unless liberals, including the Project for the New American Century, the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs (JINSA) and the National Rifle Association.

Regarding Syria, we must also remember that the country is increasingly harsh sanctions since 2004.

The chief ex-inspector Iraq Weapons of Scott Ritter wrote that “chemical weapons have a shelf life of five years. Biological weapons have a shelf life of three. “ They also emit an “ether”, experts say, that may be identified by satellite surveillance, which is sure to Syria, as before Iraq has undergone exhaustive.

God forbid, Washington, Whitehall, Tel Aviv and the coalition of the coercive again make a fuss over nothing. God help them make.

Human Rights Watch found that the CIA conceals torture in Libya

Torture, degradation and death: Journey to hell refugees in Libyan prisons

Human Rights Watch found that the CIA conceals torture in Libya

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has revealed new evidence of a US torture cover-up, showing the West snatched Gaddafi’s opponents from African and Asian countries, then tortured them at secret CIA prisons as part of post-9/11 Bush-era policies.

HRW’s new 156-page report titled “Delivered into Enemy Hands: US-Led Abuse and Rendition of Opponents to Gaddafi’s Libya” argues that the US government covered up the extent to which waterboarding was used as torture.

The report consists of 14 interviews with former US detainees who were sent back to Gaddafi’s security police around 2004, mostly members of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG).

LIFG had been attempting to overthrow Gaddafi’s regime for the past 20 years and now have joined the ranks of the new Libyan administration.

The new report used as source documents seized after the fall of the Gaddafi regime in the Libyan intelligence headquarters.  reveal previously unknown cases of CIA water-boarding that took place nine years ago in Afghanistan.  Original documents and correspondence are attached to the report and cooperation between the U.S. organized show, Britain and other Western countries with the Gaddafi regime.

“The documents are important because they shed light on the CIA rendition program still opaque, former detainees identified by name, and provide evidence to support … most notably confirm the participation of the U.S., the UK and other governments, “  the report said.

The documents  “show a high level of cooperation between the United States, the United Kingdom and the government of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in the transfer of opponents of Gaddafi in Libya custody.”

Supposedly, this cooperation was formed after Gadhafi renounced nuclear ambitions and agreed to help fight against Islamist terrorism, The New York Times.

‘Chained to the bare walls, diapers, food excellent, and denied sleep’

HRW describes the serious abuses committed by the CIA for almost a decade, which included  “being chained to the bare walls – sometimes to wear diapers [sic] – in pitch dark cells without windows, for weeks or months at a time, be subjects in painful stress positions for long periods of time, are forced into tight spaces; being beaten and slammed into the walls, which are kept inside for nearly five months without the opportunity to swim, was denied food and denied the dream of continuous music, Western deafeningly loud “,  the report found.

This report undermines earlier claims made by CIA officials and former only three suspected terrorists were water-boarded  neither Libya, while being held in U.S. custody.

It also questions the three-year criminal investigation program of CIA interrogations, which concluded last week by the U.S. Department of Justice without any charges being filed.

HRW researchers used names to track the documents discovered last detainees transferred to U.S. custody in Libya and met with them.  This revealed new information about a U.S. detention center in Afghanistan, interrogation methods and delivery operations.

Many of those detained and to live freely in Libya and occupy new positions in government.

Khalid al-Sharif (photo taken from HRW report)
Khalid al-Sharif (photo taken from HRW report)

For example, one respondent in the report, Khalid al-Sharif, is now the head of Libya’s National Guard.

He described being held in the detention center of the CIA in Afghanistan for two years and then handed to Gaddafi in 2005.

“I spent three months getting interrogated intensively during the first period [in U.S. custody] and gave me another kind of torture every day. Sometimes water is used, sometimes not,”  HRW quoted as saying.

“Sometimes they put a hood over his head and went to bed and started putting water in my mouth … the water is poured over the mouth and nose, so I felt like I was drowning … I felt like I’m drowning. “

U.S. claims that the submarine was used only for 20 to 40 seconds at a time to three suspected terrorists are also compromised by Mohammed Shoroeiya interview.  was arrested in Pakistan in 2003, moved to Afghanistan, while in U.S. custody . UU., and then handed over to the Libyan authorities.

Shoroeiya described the torture techniques used on him, including putting a hood over his head, strapping him to a wooden board and pouring water over his face for what  “felt like three minutes.”

HRW writes about doctors be present during interrogations that control the amount of torture inflicted.  captive They monitored body temperature and when it got too low, called hot water is added to cold.

Conclusions HRW

“The allegations are serious doubts about the above statements of officials of the U.S. government that only three people were waterboarded in U.S. custody,”  HRW said.  “They also reflect how little the public knows yet what happened in the secret detention program in the U.S. “.

In addition, HRW argues that this report highlights the failure of the George Bush to differentiate between Islamists behind 9/11 attacks and those involved in a struggle against their respective regimes opposition.

“This failure risks align the United States with brutal dictators and with the help of their efforts to dismiss all political opponents as terrorists,”  the report concluded.

CIA response

The CIA has strongly denied the accusations about widespread abuse of prisoners.

“The agency has been on record that there are three documented cases in which detainees were subjected to water-boarding,”  said Jennifer Youngblood, a CIA spokesman.

“While I can not comment on these allegations, the Justice Department has extensively revised the treatment of more than 100 detainees in the post-9/11 period – including allegations involving authorized interrogation techniques – and the prosecution dropped each case, “  she added .

Dossier Habeshia (Agency for Cooperation and Development, HACD)

Journey to Hell refugees in Libyan prisons:

By: Emilio Drudi

Libyan tortured to death, no one defended. The government of NATO
in Libya under conspiratorial silence gives impunity to the perpetrators ….

In Libyan prisons migrants, refugees and asylum seekers are still dying. Harassment, abuse, rape, fierce repression against any attempt to protest are outlawed practices that commit the government of NATO-NTC in Libya. Prisoners die even when it’s cold. These acts of violation of the Human Rights revealed by the agency in a documented record Habeshia.

The indifference of the international community. Europe and Italy in particular. For Italy, which has been renewed and kept alive with the revolutionary government, the agreements reached in the past by Berlusconi and Gaddafi killed Moammar Leader. The “friendship treaty” was signed by Prime Minister General Mario Monti on January 20 last year, on the understanding of specific chapters develop some special problems, such as migration control. It ignores all resources, as historian Angelo Del Boca and humanitarian organizations, that this new found “friendship” and cooperation to ensure respect for human rights in the country.

No change of course, even after that, on February 23, the European Court of Justice condemned Italy for the policy of indiscriminate expulsions at sea against migrants, commissioned by the Northern League, Roberto Maroni, Minister of Government Berlusconi. Indeed, on April 3, the new interior minister, Anna Maria Cancellieri, has signed a new agreement on immigration that was initially semi-secret, proved almost a copy of the “League” of rejections and subsequent delivery of refugees to Libyan jails. Parliament has not discussed and the press does not mention it, but in the meantime, on March 29, received a second conviction for Italy, this time by the Council of Europe, for the deaths of 63 asylum seekers adrift in a raft in the Strait of Sicily. To discover the content was Amnesty International, July 12 launched a campaign to demand the resignation. A few days earlier, on June 29, had arisen specifically the impact of this renewed agreement with the blockade at sea by Italian warships and Libyans, a boat carrying 76 asylum seekers from Eritrea and Somalia, and then delivered to the border police and transferred to the detention center Mentega Sabrata Delila, on the outskirts of Tripoli. Among them, including two pregnant women and children under one year.

On July 4, the newspaper La Repubblica, a dozen testimonies collected in the field, true “voices of hell,” he told what the living conditions of refugees in camps in Libya. Mentega Sabrata Delila is no exception. The record Habeshia now confirms and extends the “voices of hell”, which describes the plight of hundreds of refugees enslaved, tortured, killed. And what is more, at the risk of deportation: Libyan authorities want to return to the countries they fled to escape persecution and war, even though it is well known that in many cases – for Eritreans, for example – try again after traveling abroad clandestine means being sentenced to long prison terms or even death, especially when it comes to the military or military-age youth, however.

The case considers three detention centers in Homs, Tuewsha and Benghazi. The situation is almost identical in the three prisons: a hell of deprivation and abuse, violence continues, the denial of rights.“You have imprisoned the young, women and children ‘guilty’ only have fled in search of freedom and a better life, is a huge abuse – Don Mussie Zerai complaints, President of Habeshia – But still not respected even his human dignity are not carried out, are slaves in the hands of torturers who have it as they wish. “ The incidents reported by prison prison speak for themselves.

Homs. About 200 detainees. ”These days – reveals Habeshia – Libyan soldiers are forcing refugees to be registered with the embassies of the countries of origin. It’s the prelude to expulsion: the return to the State pursued to the point of forcing them to flee . This is a very serious, in which refugees are forced to the fury of violence and conflict between international humanitarian law. Libya is violating openly, in particular the African Union Convention that protects the rights of refugees and asylum seekers. Between 150 and 200 men and women are raped every day human dignity. suffer discrimination on religious grounds, and especially men are beaten continuously. Women who are sick or pregnant, they need medical checks, denied any kind of help. Any hint of protest is punished. In recent weeks, four young men were killed: three Eritreans and Somalis. A boy was beaten Eritrea cold with a knife by the military while he slept, perhaps to “punishment”. This series of abuses against women, which also prevented by washing, staged a hunger strike. The protest was violently repressed. Soldiers if taken with a guy as a scapegoat have stepped barrel first and then shot him for no reason . Seeing this horrible scene, many women began to scream and the military, to silence them, beat them and fired several shots fired. “

Tuewsha. More than 600 refugees. “It ‘s one of the most crowded detention centers – detects Habeshia – did not stop to 550 men (500 Somalis and Eritreans fifty) and sixty women: 50 Somalis and Eritreans ten. Three Eritrean youth are pregnant: has passed the eighth month. Everyone, including pregnant women, suffer from lack of food and water. Water for personal hygiene, but even drinking water, to be able to at least cooling. lot of them have been there for more than six months, six months of continued abuse. Who tried to escape and was captured, suffered severe beatings by the military guard: one lost an eye to blows, others complain of permanent physical disability. “

Benghazi. Four prisoners. ”This center – read the file – in theory it is managed by the ‘Crescent’, but actually command the armed militia of the Revolution, who come when they want and have the prisoners at will. Several women were raped and least 140 men were brought to work as slaves. Even kids younger children, do not escape the beatings and torture. According to witnesses, on the contrary, the military have invented a game using only horrible these children: a kind shoot at human targets. would avoid hitting, but still, if true, is a form of torture awful. sadistic For pure fun. “

In view of all this, Don Mussie Zerai appeal again to the international community. A European Union to intervene in the Libyan government. All’Italia gives a voice, meanwhile suspending the effectiveness of the treaties signed shortly. Agencies of the United Nations to all refugees detained are released as soon as possible and taken to facilities run by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. “On the one hand” democratic “Libya – Don Zerai protest – we expected a greater respect for human rights and a serious struggle against racism against Africans: a tough fight against all forms of discrimination based on religion, ethnic, racial . It is not in any way understand that anger against refugees. seems absurd, the deafening silence of the international community. “

UN: Gaddafi supporters tortured in Libya Several prisoners were supporters of Muammar Gaddafi were tortured to death

Several prisoners were supporters of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi were tortured to death, reports the UN special envoy to Libya, Ian Martin. Their human rights organization had already aired beforehand that Gaddafi’s supporters were tortured in the new Libya. To which Martin said: “The abuse and torture of detainees continue. The UN mission in Libya expresses its deep concern at the deaths of three people in the detention center in Misurata “.

This center is under the authority of the Ministry of Interior. “The deaths occurred on April 13 and we have reliable information that were the direct result of torture, and other reports that at least seven others have been tortured in the center.” These data reveal that the National Council Transition, which promised to end these practices applied during times of Gaddafi and respect human rights of the population, has failed.

Martin also said there were signs of torture in other parts of Libya, including in Tripoli, Zawiya and Zintan.“Remove these practices should be the highest priority of the government to reach a new culture of human rights and a new law in the post-revolutionary Libya,” the envoy.

Libya: The tragedy of hundreds of refugees in Prisons

Hums: More than 150 men and women in degrading conditions of their human dignity, living also suffer religious discrimination, especially boys, or are continually being hit in recent weeks, four refugees were killed, three nationalities of Eritrea and Somalia . One child from Eritrea was beaten with a knife in the back by the military while he slept. Today women are experiencing serious discounts avoided for up to wash because they are Christians. One of the Eritrean women’s military warned accused Outside, the drama that was consumed Friday, while a boy was killed by military in Eritrea, so three military testamentary abused her and then have cast into the wilderness , in the middle of the night. Now she is in Tripoli, except by a miracle thanks to a Libyan woman and a Sudanese man who helped her.

Tuewsha: There are 10 women from Eritrea, which 3 women pregnant, eight months and half of the other two fifth month in the last four months, and then there are about 50 Somali and Eritrean women, 32 Somali men 500 men, all suffer from the lack food, water and personal hygiene. Especially the mistreatment of men. Three weeks women, among men who also was 5-6 months in the detention center, still there, those who tried to escape then captured by the military have been severely beaten even the loss of an eye, in other carry a permanent disability cases in the physical.

Benghazi: There are about 400 people detained in a center run by the theory of “Luna Rossa”, but in fact, the command of the armed men of the revolution about to afford to enter the center, molesting women, to take 140 men to make them work as slaves. In Benghazi children are not safe from beatings and torture that enjoy military shooter with children as an object to play.

Libya from a “democratic” we expected more respect for human rights and a serious struggle against racism against Africans, a tough fight against all forms of discrimination based on religion, ethnicity and race. Do not understand why all this anger against African refugees? Why so much violence and slaughter of dozens of refugees who died under the blows of weapons of soldiers and militiamen.

I appeal to all humanitarian organizations, including UN agencies to make every effort to obtain the respect of human rights and the rights of refugees. More soon his release from prison are housed in refugee camps managed by UNHCR.

Genocide in Bani Walid

Genocide in Bani Walid

From: Mathaba

Washington bears full responsibility for waging multiple wars on humanity. It planned, initiated and controls direct and proxy conflicts across North Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia.

by Stephen Lendman

Bani Walid made headlines for three weeks. Genocide threatens its residents. Obama’s dirty hands are all over this crime of war and against humanity. Media scoundrels ignore it. More on this below.

America’s proxy war on Syria continues. Washington’s directly responsible for recruiting, arming, funding and directing Syrian death squads.

On October 24, Voice of Russia reported that Russian Armed Forces chief General Nikolai Makarov said:

“The General Staff has information that the militants, who are fighting against Syrian government troops, are armed with the portable air defense systems of various countries, including the Stinger of U.S. production.”

Disclaimers notwithstanding, Washington is directly responsible for supplying them. Makarov added:

“The US denies this fact. They say that they did not deliver anything to them (Syrian militants). However, we have reliable information that Syrian militants are armed with foreign portable air defense systems, including U.S. air defense systems.”

They didn’t arrive out of thin air. Voice of Russia said an “informed Syrian source” said the US had made a decision to hand over a consignment of MAN-PADS to (anti-Assad) militants that are fighting against Damascus.”

Man-portable air defense systems (MAN-PADS) are shoulder-launched surface-to-air missiles (SAMs).

On October 24, Russia Today (rt.com) headlined “US blocks Russia’s draft statement in UN on peaceful resolution of Bani Walid violence,” saying:

Russia’s UN envoy, Vitaly Churkin, said the move “can’t be serious. Blocking a draft statement that called (for) solv(ing) the country’s political problems without violence is very strange.”

Not at all when Washington plans genocide to assert control. Churkin knows it but used diplomatic language. Russia’s statement called for “tak(ing) urgent steps to resolve the conflict by peaceful means and to preserve the rights of all Libyan citizens.”

On October 23, Russia Today (rt.com) headlined “Bani Walid civilians bombed with gas,” saying:

A Libyan national with family in Bani Walid told RT that pro-government militias “intercept food, fuel and medicine and use grad rockets and (poison) gas weapons against Bani Walid” residents.

Daily shelling threatens the city with genocide. It’s been ongoing throughout most of October. Bani Walid is surrounded and besieged. Many deaths and injuries occurred. One source claimed 600 killed in one day. Another 1,000 were hospitalized.

Fighting rages across the city. Civilian neighborhoods are targeted. Conditions are grave. Everything is in short supply. The hospital was attacked. It “cannot house all the injured, and power only appears for a couple of hours a day.”

A resident told RT that “militias want to eliminate us.” He remained anonymous for his safety. In an extended interview, he said:

“I have got a call from my family. They tell me the situation in Bani Walid is horrible. There is an awful attack with all kind of shooting and bombing everywhere in the city. The civilian buildings are falling down.”

“The situation in Bani Walid hospital is really bad. We don’t have a lot of medicine. We don’t have enough places for wounded civilians. Right now the hospital is keeping woundedpeopleoutside.”

“No family would leave Bani Walid. All the people in Bani Walid say the same words: ‘We’ll never go from ourland.’ “

“There are no Gaddafi people (in the city). Even a member of Libya’s National Transitional Council, after visiting Bani Walid, also said there were no Gaddafi people there.”

“What is happening there is a battle between (Bani Walid’s people) and Misrata (militias), which wants to eliminate Bani Walid from existence. They want to do to Bani Walid what they did in Tawerga.”

“There is almost no electricity. It only comes for two-three hours a day. It is three weeks that no food has been able reach Bani Walid as militias that surround the town are blocking the roads. They intercept food, fuel and medicine. There is no food inside Bani Walid, not even milk for kids, no necessities.”

“Two hundred of those militias died yesterday, and the bodies are still there. They even left their wounded people there and Bani Walid hospital is taking care of those wounded people.”

“Militias went inside the city, but they only went a few kilometers before getting kicked out. They used machine guns inside, and from outside they used grad rockets and gas weapons.”

“Actually we found gas masks and the hospital’s reports very clearly say that civilians in Bani Walid have been bombed with (poison) gas.

“Moreover, when we took over the positions the militias of Misrata had been taking before being kicked out, the people of Bani Walid found there gas masks.”

“There are photos and videos of this. It’s the proof against those militias that they are using (toxic) gas against civilians. Why would you be using a gas mask if you go inside Bani Walid using only machine guns and normal rockets?”

“What Bani Walid is doing is self defense. When Bani Walid first fell during the days of the fight for Gaddafi, (militias) took away everything there was in the city: cars, money, gold….Then the people of the town said ‘It’s a fight for freedom, we have to go out,’ so they went out and their houses were robbed and destroyed. No one cared.”

“Right now the civilians in Bani Walid who are holding guns and fighting, they are fighting for their land which should not be taken from them. They just cannot go away.”

RT added that earlier reports said hospital patients “suffered from symptoms typical of gas intoxication.”

Healthy residents with no history of heart and lung diseases had difficulty breathing. They experienced increased heart rates, and suffered from muscle spasms. They also have blurred vision and intermittently fall unconscious.

Dr. Almahdi Azyadi told RT:

“They’re really bombing. Many are reported to the hospitals because of the gas attacks, and it’s happening almost every day. The gas is toxic, and there are some injuries.”

Chemical weapons use is illegal. Washington and key NATO allies use them regularly. The 1907 Hague Convention banned them. WW I use of poison gas caused 100,000 deaths and about 900,000 injuries.

In the 1920s, Britain used poison gas against Iraqis. As Secretary of State for War, Winston Churchill advocated their use. In a secret memo he said, “I am strongly in favor of using poisoned gas against uncivilized tribes.”

In 1928, the Geneva Protocol prohibited gas and bacteriological warfare.

America uses chemical, biological, and other banned weapons in all its direct and proxy wars. No-holds barred state terror is policy. Body counts don’t matter. Media scoundrels maintain silence. Genocide goes on openly. They ignore it.

In 1989, 149 nations at the Paris Chemical Weapons Conference condemned use of these weapons. After committing itself to non-use, Washington continued development, production, and covert use. Biological and depleted uranium weapons are also used.

In 1997, America ratified the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). It prohibits development, production, stockpiling, and use of these weapons. It also mandates their destruction.

Washington uses them freely. Huge chemical, biological and nuclear weapons stockpiles are maintained. New more dangerous weapons replace older ones.

CWC mandates non-complying nations be referred to the Security Council for action against them. America’s veto power precludes efforts to deter its lawlessness.

Currently, 188 State Parties are CWC signatories. They include Russia and China. Israel signed it in 1993, but hasn’t ratified it.

Chemical weapons include all toxic ones and their precursors able to cause death, injury, temporary incapacitation or sensory irritation. Munitions and other delivery devices are included.

Toxic substances are categorized as choking, blister, blood or nerve agents. Best known ones include choking chlorine and phosgene, mustard and lewisite blister agents (or vesicants), hydrogen cyanide blood agents, and sarin, soman and VX nerve agents.

Toxic chemicals used industrially are legal, despite their harmful effects. However, when used as weapons, they violate CWC provisions.

CWC’s purpose is to ensure toxic chemicals are produced only for purposes unrelated to weaponry in any form.

On October 24, RT headlined “Siege of Bani Walid, Day 20: ‘Militia committing genocide’ – RT source,” saying:

For three weeks, civilians have been killed “by toxic gas and heavy tank fire….(N)o resolution to the conflict (is) in sight.” Indiscriminate shelling continues.

Footage RT believes is reliable shows dead bodies, “women and children with missing limbs and disfigured faces.” A Libyan national in Egypt with relatives in Bani Walid told RT militias “are committing genocide.”

The city is surrounded and besieged. Essential supplies are blocked. People are starving. Medicines aren’t available to treat patients. Power is mostly off.

Militias “attack the city and are using heavy machinery to demolish houses. They are using internationally banned toxic gases against civilian people, and they bombard the population with tanks.”

They’re ordered “to kill all protesters. The city is blocked from all sides. There is no medicine, food, (or) humanitarian aid. There is nothing inside the city.”

“There is bloodshed in Bani Walid and nobody can hear the people inside the city” cry for help. Militia “guns come from the outside including from” France and Washington.

Major media reports are “lies and forgery. We plead for the humanitarian agencies of the world to help us save our families inside Bani Walid. The people need immediate help and an intervention from the outside.”

The UN did nothing. Washington blocked Russia’s attempt to help. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon pathetically said “the international community is closely monitoring the situation.”

Instead of condemning Washington-led genocide, he called for peaceful resolution. UN spokesman Martin Nesirky said:

“The Secretary-General reminds all parties of their obligations under international humanitarian law. He calls on all the Libyan authorities and those in Bani Walid to begin immediately a process to resolve the Bani Walid stand-off peacefully.”

“The Secretary-General believes that the situation in Bani Walid can be resolved in a peaceful manner that preserves the rights of all Libyan citizens and permits the state to exercise its responsibilities there.”

What else would a committed imperial tool say. He’s part of the problem, not the solution. The world body does nothing to stop war, mass killing, destruction, and unspeakable human misery.

Late reports on Bani Walid are mixed. Some say fighting continues. Others say militias or government forces control the city. On October 25, RT headlined “Bani Walid’s fate unknown amid conflicting reports of govt, militia takeovers,” saying:

Libyan officials claim they control the city. Militias say they took over. Bani Walid is dying. A local activist called conditions “very difficult. The city is almost completely destroyed. Residents are buried in the rubble.”

Many are children and the elderly. Government officials lied saying toxic gases weren’t used. In southern parts of the city, resistance continues. It’s just a matter of time until enough human life is lost to eliminate remaining remnants.

One day, when Bani Walid’s true story is told, perhaps we’ll learn many thousands died. Many others suffered horrific injuries. Appalling human suffering won’t end soon.

Washington planned it that way. Its genocidal history claimed many millions of lives. Add Bani Walid to its odious resume.

A Final Comment

Mathaba estimates about 100,000 casualties since NATO formally announced its seven month Libyan mission ended last November. It claimed over 100,000 lives. Many more were injured and displaced.

Other disturbing Mathaba estimates include around one million Libyans forced into exile in the past year, and up to 20,000 held incommunicado as political prisoners. Many are subjected to torture and/or death.

Washington-led NATO turned Libya into charnel house hell. Obama bears full responsibility. He committed a Nuremberg level crime. Occupation harshness makes things worse.

A previous article said Jamahiriya Green Resistance remains strong. Frequent battles erupt. Tribes are involved. Local militias have their own agenda. Insurgents battle each other and Green Resistance for control. Government forces serve Washington and key NATO partners.

Libya will be remembered as one of history’s great crimes. Expect protracted killing, destruction and unspeakable human misery before it ends.

Media scoundrels claim Libya was liberated. Nothing is said about America’s imperial ravaging. It’s standard policy in all US direct and proxy wars. Human lives have no value. Dominance alone matters.

Libya Herald Disinformation Outlet Admits: Qaddafi Supporters Attack Camp 27

Libya Herald Disinformation Outlet Admits: Qaddafi Supporters Attack Camp 27

From: Mathaba

With the siege and attack on Bani Walid by Misrata terrorist being seen as a betrayal even of the `February 17 revolution` the Libyan masses are increasingly united against the current regime with all manner of protests and actions taking place across the country as popular anger hits an all-time high

The British Secret Intelligence Service “Mi6″ operation “Libya Herald” funded via its London Times newspaper publication while ostensibly financed by a Libyan “businessman” and edited by George P.B. Grant — a self-confessed activist during the anti-Jamahiriya “revolution” of last year — has been publishing numerous articles claiming that there are no supporters of Muammar Qaddafi in Libya.

Having been a mouthpiece for the failed academic “Jordan Prime Minister” Abushagur who turned out to have the shortest life of any prime minister in history, with his demise and the inability to hide any more the realities of Libya especially in the wake of Grant’s “personal friend” U.S. spy ambassador Stevens death along with the deaths of three other top U.S. spies in the country and the subsequent flight of thousands of U.S. mercenaries from Libya, the paper is forced to report half truths.

It is also publishing articles designed to erase history and replace it with a fake version, which may work with some American-Libyans who only returned to Libya during the last year, but which is devoid of all reality and fact. Then at the same time the publication frequently refers to admissions of “Qadhafi loyalists” and jamahiri Resistance fighters carrying out actions across the country.

Today Grant published a story on “Sirte one year on” in which he is forced to admit the near total support for Muammar Qadhafi in Sirte, in spite of its brutal razing to the ground after months of total siege last year and non-stop bombing by U.S.-led NATO forces that all but wiped out the town and all life in it. Wary of foreigners and Mi6 assets such as Grant, the residents nonetheless were keen to show him their green flags and loyalty to Qadhafi and his revolutionary principles.

Again today, another story appeared in the British Herald which operates in occupied Libya while Mathaba is banned from doing so, revealing that the independent “congressman” for Sorman was attacked west of Tripoli today and his car stolen. Car jacking are a daily occurrence along with much more serious crimes across Libya nowadays, whereas previously to the conspiracy of February 17, 2011 and subsequent events, Libya was the safest country on earth.

The Herald says that Adel Asharshari, the independent terrorist congress member from Sorman was “driving not far from Camp 27, which at the time was under attack from Qaddafi supporters, when he was stopped.” It also says that it is now rumored that he has been held prisoner. But the paper attempts to lay the blame on thieves and not the Qaddafi supporters who were busy attacking Camp 27.

The entire Libya is out of control with the masses — including those who were against the Jamahiriya and its corruption in recent years and most of the corrupt elements who destroyed the integrity of the Jamahiriya and the Al-Fateh Revolution who are now side by side with foreign American-Libyan terrorists such as “Congress President” Megarief — are now vehemently opposed to the regime which does not represent the interests of the Libyan masses.

Henry Levy compares the Libyans march as a march of Zionism in Palestine in the bar offered by Cannes

Cannes (France) (AFP) – do not hesitate to Bernard-Henri Levy, French intellectual who knows himself constantly as a “friend of Israel” on the comparison of the march of Libyans and their revolt against the system of Muammar Gaddafi‘s march by Jewish control over Palestine and the match between the two battles, which looked up and gave birth “to defend freedom ”.
The Bernard-Henri Levy and his theory is this phrase in his tape “section of Tobruk” directed by French director jointly with Mark Russell, who presented in the “special offer” Friday as part of the Cannes Film Festival.
Levy says that the film came to be portrayed in particular how ideas can be achieved for the first time in history through military intervention in a country, not to speak Levy on Libya, but to talk about Syria, which wants to have international intervention similar to what happened in Libya.
And depicted in the tape Levy-funded generation Herzog moves next to French officials in the world to convince them to military intervention in Libya and in consultation with the Libyans, where he visited Libya several times.
Levy and played a role as a consultant for the sake of the former French president Nicolas Sarkozy, who stressed that the delay in doing something for both Tunisia and Egypt was motivated to intervene later in Libya.
But many questions raised about the economic returns to France in particular and NATO in general of this intervention and about who will pay the bill, especially after the appearance of documents in the French press refers to it and that France’s share of the proceeds of Libyan oil as a result of its intervention in Libya and the no-fly zone above underestimate the role played by Levy.
However, the French thinker denied the fact that oil deals. ”What is said in the press crap. Be the first military intervention is not than interest and this has never happened in history. Was not intrusive, as in Iraq or the occupation, depending on the strategic interests, as in some countries. What happened in Libya was a miracle was meeting a number of heads countries who are still burning in their heart and they decided that Bosnia is not possible to leave Benghazi for destruction. “
And Ray Levy said the war in Libya, “were not a colonial war, not for oil, but the password for her + Bosnia +”.
And the holding of Bernard-Henri Levy on Friday night news conference in unusual circumstances in Cannes, as journalists, according to observers of the long years of the festival is the first time in which they are holding a press conference prior to submitting the film.
That triggered a protest of some journalists during the conference which was attended by a few of them, this approach is “logical”, adopted by the management of the festival with the film “section of Tobruk.”
He attributed some of what they described as a “lapse” or “strategic error” of the festival to his administration’s desire to avoid the controversy that attended the Cannes Film Festival when viewing the film “Bosnia” to Bernard-Henri Levy himself in 1994.
Before the press conference was attended by the festival’s delegate general Thierry Vrimo is usually on and announced that the festival was “proud to offer this film in the performances, especially as it deals with the Libyan Revolution” after the submission of revolutions Syria and Tunisia last year.
Attended the press conference next to Levi Libyan figures, including former ambassador to Libya in Paris after the revolution Mansour Saif Al-Nasr and a delegation of the Syrian Kurdish journalist Walid al-Khalifa, a member of the Transitional Council for Syrian Kurds Aziz Othman, painter Randa priest.
He has not seen one of those tape does not know its contents, except Randa priest also announced at the conference which was attended on the platform in addition to the four people did not reveal their names, the back of two of them masked and announced they had arrived in the last hours of Syria, and they had two fighters and they Amadtaran so for security reasons.
Said Bernard-Henri Levy, it’s important to show these “fighters” on our side at Cannes that the film is dedicated to them.
He called Levi audience will see the tape to the perception of Homs instead of Misurata, which sees in the film and to put a shield instead of Benghazi to Damascus instead of Tripoli, “I hope that these pictures taken yesterday, images of tomorrow and are looking at it as if it was filmed in Syria.”
And again called for military intervention in Syria. In response to a question whether he aims through it to weaken Iran, “even though you Sasdmkm I am not against intervention in Syria, said it would weaken Iran. Syria is the armed wing of Iran in the region and wish to be active in Syria, as we were active in Libya.”
He also said at the press conference that “what fight the for him next to them is to reach reconciliation between the Muslim world and democracy. Islam and democracy can meet without to give up all of them for his (…) Democracy is not the American way, but the way the Islamic with respect freedom of movement and expression and equality between men and women and so on. “
Comes the movie “section of Tobruk” after the book has accomplished Levy on Libya, where it seems “a messenger of freedom,” moving between countries for the imposition of international intervention in Libya has been visited in order that both Turkey and Israel and the United States as well as France.

Fascislamism - Bernard-Henri Lévy

Uploaded by  on Dec 8, 2008

French philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy defends his term “fascislamism,” claiming modern-day islamic fundamentalist movements to have roots in European fascism of the 1930s. Lévy argues that condemning fascism on one hand while tolerating muslim fundamentalism on the other is a form of racism in reverse.
One of the world’s leading intellectuals revisits his political roots, scrutinizes the totalitarianisms of the past, as well as those on the horizon, and argues powerfully for a new political and moral vision for our times – ALOUD at the LAPL

Inshah Malik is trying rebuild Kashmir with a different weapon – her pen

Young writer Inshah Malik tells the stories of Kashmiri women and the often brutal effects on them from decades of conflict.

Ms. Inshah Malik is a PhD Scholar at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India. She has an Mphil from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai India. She writes on issues of women and Kashmir movement in several magazines and web-portals including Opinion Maker. She has also extensively worked with the issues of disability, Dalit and tribal rights in Maharashtra. She is presently working on women’s agency in different protest movements in Kashmir.

SRINAGAR, INDIA-CONTROLLED KASHMIR

Inshah Malik may have a plan to share with the conflict-weary women of the Arab Spring. For most of her 27 years, she has lived through a brutal clash that ripped apart her homeland in Kashmir, on the border between India and Pakistan.

Recent posts

Now Ms. Malik, like a growing number of other young Kashmiris, is trying to rebuild her community with a different weapon – her pen.

For communities to heal and women to gain a greater role, she says, it’s crucial that her people never forget the collective memories of women searching for their loved ones and being brutalized by conflict. Though she’s just starting out, her work might offer examples for the women of SyriaEgyptLibyaTunisia, and Yemen. How can they start rebuilding their communities and making a space for themselves when the protests die down and the world stops paying attention?

RELATED: The five most dangerous countries for women

Malik has written a collection of stories of women from villages in a recently published book, based on her graduate thesis “Muslim Women Under the Impact of Ongoing Conflict in Kashmir.” She writes of women such as Dilfroz, who was raped in front of her family during an army search, thus bringing attention to stories that usually go unheard. She hopes to have the book reprinted in Kashmir at a reduced cost so that it can be used in the course curriculum in universities.

“In Kashmir, for the entire conflict, women have always been out there fighting,” Malik says, looking out the window of her home in Srinagar, the summer capital.

In 2010 she frantically posted Facebook updates as Indian security forces smashed these windows during massive protests. “The conflict has actually proven to be more brutal for women because … [that] violence [was] intended to demean the community, to demean the enemy, to demean the people who are fighting the authorities,” she says.

Kashmir is one of the most militarized place in the world, with some 600,000 Indian soldiers policing the region near the Himalayas where India, Pakistan, and China converge. The military presence picked up in 1989 when Pakistani-trained militants began crossing the border into Indian-controlled Kashmir, leading to an armed movement for independence from India.

In the years that followed, Amnesty International reports, more than 70,000 people were killed, thousands of women were widowed, and thousands more were raped. By the late 1990s, the armed movement was quashed by Indian forces.

The conflict goes back to 1947, when most of Muslim-majority Kashmir was grabbed by India during the partition of India and Pakistan. Kashmiris were promised a plebiscite on their political future by the United Nations, but that vote was never allowed to happen.

In the last two decades, the movement has shifted from an armed struggle to stone-throwing protests. Now, young Kashmiris, like Malik, are turning to social media and other nonviolent tools.

Growing up in the midst of the strife in the 1990s, Malik remembers her father, uncles, brother, and other men in the neighborhood being dragged out of their houses at gunpoint during crackdowns by Indian soldiers. She recalls that the women left in their homes were terrified of being raped or molested.

Having lived through these horrifying moments, she wanted to reach out to the women in her community. She spent weeks listening to the stories of dozens of women who were raped in a single night in 1991 in Kunan Poshpora, a remote village in Kashmir.

Caught in the middle, women were raped by both soldiers and militants. But the abuse did not stop with the original attack. They were then often blamed by their families and shunned by society for what had happened to them.

Even in those bleak times, Malik writes, it was women like Raja, who was brutalized in Kunan Poshpora but spoke out against the army while helping the women raped in her village, who held society together.

“I want to give Kashmiri women a tongue to tell what they have faced,” says Malik, who is pursuing a Ph.D. on women and the Kashmiri conflict at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi.

Though protests are still important, she says it’s time that Kashmiris find other ways to advance their cause.

The women of Syria, Libya, and Egypt, who are now facing similar challenges, should pen narratives too, Malik suggests. She hopes to draw attention to crimes of sexual violence and to lobby for greater acceptance of rape victims within their communities.

While her stories are only a beginning, she’s already pushing for increased understanding of subjects long thought taboo.

Kashmiri activist Anjum Zamarud Habib, the only Kashmiri woman to be jailed under a draconian terrorist law know as the 2003 Prevention of Terrorism Act, spent five disconsolate years behind bars on terrorism charges that were later overturned. She wrote about the injustices she faced in her book “Prisoner No. 100.”

Malik has given a voice to young women – and men – who grew up during the conflict, Ms. Habib says.

“The children of conflict are more educated and more experienced” than her previous generation, she says. “My wish is that more women come forward. The movement has already been transferred to the next generation, whether they like it or not.”

But rebuilding a society fractured by war, especially for women, will not be easy. Malik, along with the young women of the Arab Spring, are now reaching for a role in society beyond what has ever existed for them before.
